What is the probability of winning Maryland Lottery? ›

Prize amounts of $600 or less in red can be cashed at any Maryland Lottery retailer. The approximate overall probability of winning Powerball® is 1 in 24.87.

Lottery fuels over 4,400 retail businesses throughout the state by driving foot traffic and increasing income through commissions. In FY2023, the Maryland Lottery's retailers earned $219.9 million in sales and cashing commissions, an increase of 8.3%, or $16.9 million. The average retailer commission was $50,000.

The Maryland Lottery will award $50,000 for each game board matching five of five original winning numbers (“Winning Numbers”), up to a maximum of 12 game boards.

All Maryland Lottery retailers are authorized to redeem winning tickets with prizes of $600 or less. Winning tickets up to $5,000 can be redeemed at Expanded Cashing Authority Program (XCAP) retail locations.

For prizes of $5,001 or more, the Lottery is required by law to deduct the following taxes from your winnings: 24% federal tax; 8.75% state tax if you are a Maryland resident, or; 8% state tax if you are not a Maryland resident.

The Maryland Lottery headquarters pays prizes valued up to $25,000, less offsets and obligations, by check on the day of the claim. The Maryland Lottery headquarters does not pay any prizes in cash. For prizes valued at more than $25,000, please allow at least 30 business days for the claim to be processed and paid.
